What Do We Do ?
The commercial application of membrane technology occurred with the introduction of Reverse Osmosis (RO) into water treatment in the early 1960’s, funded by US Defence spending. At this time, microfiltration (MF) devices began to be introduced into sterilizing applications in the process industries, followed a decade later by the development of ultrafiltration (UF) membranes for treating process streams and water.

Membranes are now widely applied both within municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment applications, together with specialized applications within the process industries. The exponential growth of the application of membranes began in the early 1990’s with the onset of municipal water applications to meet drinking water regulations. Key concerns were the removal of viruses, bacteria, and protozoan parasites such as cryptosporidia and giardia.

Now membranes are widely applied both in drinking water and, more recently wastewater, and this has provided a spur for the growth of water and wastewater treatment in industrial applications. Combined with the steady growth of RO in desalination, re-use, and recycling applications, prospects for the membrane industry remain strong.

The rapid uptake of membrane technology has raised serious issues for both technology providers, and users of the technology. There have been important developments in membranes, module design, and operating philosophies, but this has led to a bewildering array of choices to those new to the field, both for the providers to the industry, and for the users.

Membrane Consultancy Associates (MCA) aims to assist new entrants and practioners in the field with the knowledge to:

  • Select the most suitable technology for their application
  • Implement a cost effective and efficient membrane system design
  • Achieve trouble free operation, and solve problems as they arise

  • Also MCA seeks to facilitate the development and improvement of membrane technology, and to help companies in the application of their technology and in problem solving.
